MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO-AM) - Clay County residents could soon be hit with another tax. Next week, county commissioners will discuss a proposal to enact a motor vehicle wheelage tax. A $10.00 surcharge would be paid when residents renew their license tabs.
County Administrator Brian Berg says the tax would raise about $460,000 a year to maintain roads. Berg says commissioners may also decide to share a portion of the revenues with individual cities.
Some vehicles, such as motorcycles, trailers and collector cars would be exempt.
The Minnesota legislature recently passed a bill that allows individual counties to collect a wheelage tax.
