Drought Could Hurt Corn Palace Tourist Attraction

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) - The murals that decorate the Corn Palace tourist attraction in Mitchell could become a casualty of the drought.

The hot weather and lack of rainfall this summer have stunted some of the fields in which the colored corn for the murals is growing. Corn Palace Director Mark Schilling says that the facility's board will discuss the matter on Tuesday.

One option is to keep the current murals in place another year. The last time that happened was 2006, also because of drought.

It takes about 275,000 ears of corn to decorate the Corn Palace, which attracts about 200,000 tourists each summer.
