FRISCO, TX. - 12 months and 14 grueling games have passed since North Dakota State and Sam Houston State met in the FCS National Championship. Today, top ranked and defending champion Bison lock horns with the 5th ranked Sam Houston State Bearkats in Frisco, Texas.

Both teams opened with stout defense, but it was special teams the affected the opening momentum as the Herd had to punt from their own endzone leaving the Bearkats with great starting field position on their second position.

But the Bearkats returned the favor with a missed 32-yard field goal and after a 57-yard run by John Crockett, it was the Bison who looked to take the initial lead.

Adam Keller knocked in a 32-yard field goal to give the Herd a 3-0 lead.

Sam Houston quickly responded. After driving down the field, Miguel Antonio knocked in a 38-yard field goal to knot things up at 3-3 early in the 2nd quarter.

Sam Houston looked to continue to control the game, but it was Marcus Williams captured the momentum for the Herd with his 11th career interception.

Brock and the Bison offense made it count. They stampeded down the field before Jensen took it in himself giving the Herd a 10-3 lead late in the second quarter.

The Bison looked to have their second pick in as many drives when Andre Martin stepped in front of a Brian Bell pass, but Martin was flagged for holding setting up the Bearkats in Bison territory.

Bell found tight end K.J. Williams in the back of the endzone to tie things up at 10-10.

Sam Houston started with the ball in the second and after a pass interference call on Marcus Williams moved the ball down the field.

And after it looked like Timothy Flanders broke free for a score, it was a Bearkats holding penalty that erased a touchdown.

The very next play Carlton Littlejohn grabbed the Herd’s second pick and stealing another big drive by Sam Houston.

The Bison offense turned a turnover into points for the second time as Jensen rushed in from the half-yard line to give the Herd a 17-10 lead.

Sam Houston looked like they’d be answering with a score of their own after moving the ball well once again, but on a 4th-and-short, the Bison defense dialed up the perfect blitz and took over on downs at the 36-yard line.

 

NDSU continued their 3rd quarter dominance marching down the field with power and trickery before Sam Ojuri dove into the endzone and putting the Bison up 23-10.

After a bad snap on the extra point, Frisco fortune continued to stay with the Bison when Keller heaved the ball to Mike Hardie who came down with a two-point-conversion and a 25-10 NDSU lead.

But it was the 4th Quarter where the Bison showed the strength of a champion, piling on two more touchdowns and adding two more interceptions and burying the Bearkats in 39-13 hole.

The Herd grinded out the clock and counted down to their second National Championship and fans stormed the field in Frisco as the clock struck zero on the Bearkats.
