Pinto's Preview: NDSU vs. IUPUI

by Dan Gunderson

After starting the Summit League season off on the wrong foot, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams for North Dakota State University will be looking to bounce back today against IUPUI

NDSU Bison 11-5 (0-1) @ IUPUI Jaguars 5-13 (0-1) 1 p.m. (790/KFGO)

· IUPUI has struggled all year long. The reason being that they have no balance. Two players are averaging over 10 points per game for IUPUI, Ian Chiles at 17.6 and Mitch Patton at 12.2. Outside of that, IUPUI is looking for that other player to be able to help out. If the Jaguars get that extra help, they will start to find some consistency.

· NDSU’s loss to Fort Wayne was due to allowing too many points off of turnovers. They allowed 24 points off of turnovers and they cannot allow the same type of thing to happen against the Jaguars. That is a lack of concentration on defense after the turnover and look for that to change in this game.

· The other thing that was apparent against Fort Wayne for the Bison is lack of bench scoring. The Bison were outscored 29-5 in bench scoring. Mike Felt needs to step up his game or this team is going to be in trouble. Look for the Bison to get Felt some early shots when he comes in so he can build up his confidence.

Prediction: NDSU 70 IUPUI 60

IUPUI Jaguars 10-6 (0-1) @ NDSU Bison 3-12 (0-1) 2 p.m. (740/The Fan)

· The Jaguars average 7.9 steals per game. The Bison only average 12.4 turnovers a game. NDSU will have to keep the turnovers down and not allow IUPUI to break out and score in the open floor.

· Unlike Fort Wayne, IUPUI does not have that one scorer that scares you. They do have a deep bench, with mostly likely nine to 10 players seeing significant minutes. Look for the Jaguars to be able to have their best players on the floor at their best because they won’t be burned out by playing too any minutes.

· Marena Whittle for NDSU had 34 points and 15 boards against Fort Wayne. If Brooke Lemar’s offensive game is on point against IUPUI, NDSU could have the makings of a very tough one-two punch.

Prediction: IUPUI 65 NDSU 48
