It's Only Preseason...Right?

by Cade

In full disclosure, I'm a die-hard Vikings fan.  The 2013 preseason has not been kind to Purple Nation.  We're always told by people who know, that the third preseason game is the only one that kind of matters out of all four of the meaningless games each team plays.  If the 34-14 drubbing at the hands of San Francisco was what Vikes fans should expect this season, it's going to be a long year.

Minnesota came on strong late last year to earn a spot in the playoffs.  I don't even want to get into the Joe Webb playoff debacle versus the Pack.  It's tough to do much in the playoffs with a guy that throws the ball straight up in the air.  With that being said, I expected the Vikes to pick up where they left off.  A strong running game with a stout defense.

We've all heard the excuses for quarterback, Christian Ponder last year.  His arm was hurt, he needs time to adjust to the game, he has no receivers.  This year it's time for Ponder to take that step to the next level.  If not, he won't be in Minnesota much longer.

Running Back, Adrian Peterson basically put the entire Viking Ship on his back en route to a 2,000-yard season.  I have no doubt in my mind that he will have another phenomenal year running the rock.  But, I'm not sure he can replicate what he did in 2012.

Each side of the trenches for Minnesota are supposed to be some of the best in the league.  But, both the offensive and defensive line looked weak and over-powered versus a really good 49ers squad.

Secondary is always a question mark in Minnesota.

Even if the Vikings finish the preseason without a win, is that an indicator of what will happen during the regular season?  Let's hope not.

Only one team in NFL history has gone win-less in the preseason and on to win a Super Bowl the same year.  Any guesses???

It was the 1982 Washington Redskins.  The 1990 Bills and 2000 Giants each made it to the Big Game without a preseason win, but they both lost the championship.

Heck, in 2008, the Detroit Lions won all four preseason games, only to fall to 0-16 in the regular season.

Let's just hope it is, what it is.  It's the preseason.

But, if Minnesota wants to have another playoff run, they better fix what needs fixing as soon as possible.  The regular season is less than two weeks away.
