The attack turkey of north Moorhead

by Mike McFeely

Just about every morning near 1st Ave. North and 3rd Street in Moorhead, by the Riverview Heights high-rise just before the bridge over the Red River, a tom turkey hangs out and "attacks" cars. The turkey will charge moving cars, peck at tires of cars stopped at the nearby stoplights and generally try to chase off any vehicles that happen to pass through the area.

I'm thinking the turkey has issues.

(Pretty bad video, I apologize. But I was driving while trying to take video.)

The turkey has been doing this for at least the past few months. I see it almost every morning on my drive to work. He stops traffic. There is a minor traffic jam every morning because of this turkey. It is comical.

Funny thing is, the turkey has been allowed to do this for the past few months. Any place else in the world, that turkey would long be dead. Somebody would've said "to hell with it" and ran the turkey over. People have to get to work, after all. But in Moorhead-Fargo, where people are so nice and so passive-aggressive, they are changing lanes and stopping and swerving to avoid killing this turkey. All while angrily beeping their horns, of course.

I've even seen Moorhead cops in the area trying to shoo the turkey away. I understand the turkey charged one of the cops a few months ago, thereby earning the nickname "Attack Turkey."

Remarkable.

I'm assuming that this won't go on too much longer. Either the turkey will be removed by animal control or the police ... or somebody will hit it with their car or truck ... and the Attack Turkey of Moorhead will be no longer.

In the meantime, I'm immensely enjoying my commute to work every morning.
