Biggest challenge for NDSU students? Signs, signs, everywhere their signs

by Mike McFeely

The biggest challenge for North Dakota State students Saturday when ESPN's College GameDay visits Fargo to highlight the Bison will be their intellectual acuity.

Students will have to be witty, clever, succinct, creative, funny, smart, hip, relevant, edgy ... and, yeah, sometimes a little tasteless, sophomoric and dirty.

It's all about the signs.

One of the traditions of GameDay is for students of the host school to flood the background of TV shots with handmade signs. That's easy. It doesn't take much to write "Go NDSU!" The challenge is to be funny and clever enough to GET NOTICED.

Part of the fun, too, is to sneak a good insult or sexually-oriented sign into the background. (These college kids today ....)

Irreverent sports web site Deadspin.com compiles some of the best screen shots of signs each week. (Thanks to my producer at KFGO, Daniel Gunderson, for pointing out this to me.) I've included some here. Others are just a little too, um, flavorful for me to include on a family-friendly blog administered by my bosses at Midwest Communications.

My favorite among the few I've included is "Even Forrest Gump got into 'Bama."

So here's a sampling. Enjoy. And put that creativity, cleverness and wit to work, NDSU students.

"Sioux Suck" need not apply.
