To Be Irish... (Written by: Joel Heitkamp)

by Amy Iler

St. Patty's Day is just around the corner!  This weekend Fargo will not have the longest parade of the season, but I think it will be the best. There is something about those who are Irish that sets them apart from the rest of us.

My roots go back to Germany and Norway. This probably explains some of the conflicts I have in many areas of my own life. Catholic or Lutheran, fish or beef, sing every verse or stop when the Priest turns around.

I’ve always been jealous of those with Irish decent. Not only do they love being Irish, but they sure seem to have more fun.

I married a woman with Irish ancestry and we have children (and now they have children). I asked my wife once why she doesn't celebrate that part of her heritage… she said it wasn't a big celebration around her house growing up. Times have changed.

Now Sue and the girls have decided to turn St Patrick's Day into a reason to get together. They (and grandkids) will all dress in green; we’ll head to the parade and enjoy the day together.

How many years does it take to make a tradition?

Happy St. Patty's Day!
