When you look at the stats for Furman University, nothing pops out at you. They score 23.9 points per game and give up 23.2 points per game. They have the 103 ranked total offense in the FCS and the 72 ranked defense in the FCS.
Their offense and defense make watching paint dry seem exciting. In fact, when you look at their team statistics, they are not ranked in the top 20 nationally in anything. Except….
Turnovers. The greatest equalizer of any football stat is turnovers and the Paladins cause a ton of them. They are fourth nationally in fumbles recovered with 16 and they have forced 31 fumbles so far this season.
They also led the Southern Conference with 13 interceptions and they have the seventh best turnover margin in the nation at plus 13.
They have been able to rely on the turnover creating momentum for them throughout this season. That would scare me if I were a North Dakota State University football fan.
NDSU has lost the ball 16 times this season, 10 of those coming via the fumble. While quarterback Brock Jensen has been better at not throwing multiple interceptions in games this year, it is still worth noting that the Furman’s secondary has excellent ball skills.
So, while we look at this team and see an opponent NDSU will run over, be wary of their ability to turn the field over with just one single play.
