Crockett crashes Salukis Homecoming, NDSU 31 - SIU 10

by Elliot Hoekstra

After two straight home games, the Bison hit the road to take on a surging Southern Illinois team in Carbondale, Illinois.

The Salukis took advantage of the home field and homecoming crowd early when quarterback Kory Faulkner found LaSteven McKinney in endzone taking a 7-0 lead.

Southern Illinois added to their lead when Thomas Kinney booted a 47 yard field goal making the score 10-0.

But late in the first half, the Herd found their stride, and the scoreboard, with a familiar connection between Brock Jensen and Zach Vraa with just a 1:30 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter making the score 10-7.

With :06 seconds left in the half, Jensen fired deep into the endzone, but the shot came up empty leaving the score 10-7 at the half with the Bison receiving the kick in the 2nd half.

In the opening drive of the second half, it looked like the Salukis had retaken the momentum after a Jensen fumble. But after a field goal attempt hit off the upright, it was the Bison that took control of the game.

When it looked like the Herd would be tying the game up with a field goal, a Southern Illinois penalty gave the Bison drive new life. And after converting on a fourth-and-one, John Crockett found the endzone giving the Bison their first lead of the day at 14-10.

The next Bison possession it was Crockett again sprinting to the endzone extending the lead to 21-10 and silencing the crowd in Cardondale.

But Crockett wasn’t finished yet, cracking into the Saluki defense once more in the 3rd quarter and pushing the Bison lead to 28-10.

Adam Keller added the icing on the cake with a 28 yard field goal in the 4th quarter sealing a 31-10 win for the Bison.
